Alcohol Detox at Home

There are many ways to get treatment for alcohol addiction. Numerous studies have shown that controlled drinking does not help alcoholics to recover from the addictions; the first step is to undergo alcohol detoxification. Generally when people have an alcohol abuse problem, they want to seek a discreet treatment because being an alcoholic is associated with negative image in the society. One way to become anonymous is by doing the alcohol detox at home. There are pros and cons in doing alcohol detoxification at home in comparison with seeking treatment at the rehab centers.

When you decided to do the detox at home, you would be alone; therefore you might feel left out. In contrast, at the rehab centers you would be able to interact with other patients that are facing similar issue with alcohol. Knowing that there are others who are going through the same problems, you would be able to connect and communicate more openly to them better because you share similar challenges. This interaction is very helpful for the patient's self-esteem.

When detoxing at home, you would have more freedom because it is a control-free environment. You need to be highly motivated and preferably has someone to help you in order to make your surroundings alcohol free. On the other hand, at the rehab centers, there will be no alcohol around, thus it would improve your chance to detox successfully. However, after completing the alcohol detox at the rehab centers, you would face a big challenge when you get back home because there would be no one at home or work to prevent you from start drinking again. On the flip side, upon successful detoxification at home, there would be fewer chances that you will go back to your old drinking habit. The fact that you are able to complete the detox at home, it shows that you manage to control your cravings and this could only be done through self-control. The longer you are alcohol free, the fewer cravings you are going to have.

In conclusion, when you choose to do the alcohol detox at home, the detox process will be harder, but there will be fewer challenges after the detox has been completed. On the other hand, alcohol detoxification at the rehab center would ensure you to be able to complete the detoxification successfully, but facing more challenges after you are out of the rehab center.
